Hiring of microfilms
Microfilm and microfiche from the collections of the Family History Library of the Genealogical Society of Utah - the family history society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - can be ordered in for viewing in the SAG library. These include English and Welsh parish registers, European resources, American census records, British army records, Australian parish registers, and much more.
You can order a film or fiche for viewing in one of two ways.
- Go to the LDS online and set up your own free account, nominating the SAG library at 2/379 Kent Street as the place at which you wish to view your films. Orders require payment by Visa or mastercard. When your item arrives at the SAG you will be automatically notified by email.
- Place your order with us in person, by fax, mail or online. When your item arrives you'll be notified by phone or email, whichever you nominate as your preferred method.
To order a film or fiche, you first need to identify the film number. We can assist you with this at our library or you can consult the Family History Library Catalogue online.
From 1 January 2010 the cost for each item ordered is $7.75 for 60 days. You can arrange to extend the loan for a further 60 days on payment of the appropriate fee.
Please note that when we announced this service to our members in the December 2009 SAG-e we believed the hiring fee to be $5.00 per film. We have since been advised it is $7.75. The '90 day' loan period also now covers the time from when you order your film until it must be returned - the actual available viewing time will be 60 days. To help other researchers you will be encouraged to return your film as soon as you have finished with it, rather than hold it for the full 60 days.
Viewing charge
Please note that there is viewing charge of $2.95 payable on each LDS microfilm or set of microfiche you order for viewing at the SAG library. This is payable when you visit to view your film and is a once off fee per film or set of fiche. It must be paid regardless of whether you order your film through the SAG or online direct with the LDS.
This fee is not applicable to viewing the SAG 's own collection of microfilm and microfiche.
Other services
From 1 January 2010 you can also nominate to pay an additional charge to have films and fiche on permanent loan if you organise this through the LDS. The SAG has limited microfilm storage space in its libray at 379 Kent Street and requests that anyone wishing to order films and fiche on this basis to contact the SAG staff to discuss this first. it cannot currently guarantee permanent access to these films at 2/379 Kent Street.
Non-member viewing of LDS films at 379 Kent Street
Non-members of the SAG must be aware that, if they nominate the SAG as the library at which they wish to view items ordered online through the LDS service, they will be charged the current daily non-member visitor fee for every visit they make to view their ordered items, in addition to all other applicable charges.
