ANNUAL APPEAL 2021
SAG MEMBER DONATED ARTEFACTS DIGITISATION AND PRESERVATION
The 2021 Annual Appeal is for the digitisation and preservation of the Society’s unique artefacts created or donated by past SAG members. This includes the Library Cemetery Transcription collection and we are working with a targeted amount of $20,000 for this and related activities.
Background on the Library Cemetery Transcription
These documents are a vital snapshot in time of transcriptions of existing headstones and the information contained upon them. The collection dates from transcriptions recorded in the 1950s as part of a major project to transcribe headstones from around the state by volunteers. Those headstones may not be readable today, headstones have fallen, been vandalised or indeed the cemeteries may no longer exist, making this collection a vital source of information for family historians.
The transcriptions currently exist as bound physical papers held in the society’s library and manuscript collection, and many of these are showing their age. Funds are urgently sought to digitise this unique collection, which holds major significance for Australian genealogical research. Digitisation will secure its preservation and greater access to current and future members.
