2025 August Certificate in Genealogical Research - Enrolment (05 August 2025)

The Society's Certificate in Genealogical Research is designed for those with more than three years family history research experience and who have gained at least some elementary research skills and a broad, even if basic, knowledge of resources available. To complete the assessments, you are expected to extend your research beyond what can be found on the internet and to use local libraries and family history society collections, either in-person or remotely where possible.

The program consists of 8 assignments plus an online exam undertaken across a year. For each assignment you will be given the outline of what is required, together with some guidance to consider in preparing your submission. The assignments have been carefully selected to reflect the sorts of skills needed by genealogists and the program is essentially practical exercises in self-directed learning from experience.

The SAG Family History Research Centre & Library is a community space where we connect with researchers in person and online. It is the heart of our research support service joining together our experienced volunteers and staff with members and the public.

Our collection is a treasure trove of resources for family historians and genealogists to learn from! Our dedicated family history library collection contains the Society’s print and electronic items which cover both Australian and international material (especially England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland). Our diverse collection includes BDM indexes, biographies, cemetery transcriptions, burial registers, local histories, parish registers, published family histories, shipping records and more!

We provide access to the major commercial sites such as Ancestry, FindMyPast, The Genealogist, MyHeritage, British Newspaper Archive, Discovery (National Archives UK), Biographical Database of Australia and much more. We also have more than 2,200 electronic databases covering both Australian and overseas topics.

We are also an 'affiliate library' of FamilySearch and have increased access to digital collections.

GROUP: Scottish Research Group (08 April 2026)

We welcome Rosslyn Macphail, author of "From Fighting Napoleon to the Scottish Military Academy: The Life of Captain John Orr". Rosslyn will give us an insight into her ancestor and what research she undertook about John's life and the military academy which gave depth to her book.

Alistair Henderson will also join us to talk about The Register of Deeds, also known as the Books of Council and Sessions, which is the record of documents kept by Scotland’s primary civil court, the Court of Sessions. The records document many of the important events on our ancestors’ lives – marriages, deaths, borrowings and business, children and inheritances.

The Register of Deeds spans the activities of the full breadth of society over some 500 years. It is a huge record series which contains both original legal documents and their copies made by the clerks of the various courts all over the country. The records are of importance to family historians as so many of the other primary Scottish records have been lost over the years. However, it has remained relatively inaccessible to researchers outside of Scotland due to a lack of published or on-line finding aids and calendars.

To improve this situation, a co-operative effort has started between Scottish genealogists and the Genealogical Society of Queensland Scottish Group to transcribe and index the records for future generations to use. This international project has become possible by the use of modern imaging techniques and communication methods to enable the volunteers to access the records remotely.

This presentation will demonstrate the usefulness of the records and also explore ways in which the records can be accessed, particularly by researchers outside of Scotland.

Come along and join us as we research our Scottish ancestors in a collaborative, friendly and engaging research group. Make sure you have your questions ready and also be ready to assist others if you are able to as this is the basis of what all SAG Groups are about - people helping other people with ideas and suggestions about their family research.

Topic: On and Off The Field” – ANZAC DAY Flash Stories

With ANZAC Day approaching, we're writing military-themed 'flash' stories again, which can be based either on those in war zones or those at home, male or female. Writing stories 'in a flash' is a great exercise, making us write within a very limited word count (250-300 words), and focusing on a moment, a scene or a feeling, rather than the usual reporting style full of BDM dates.

War conflicts affect everyone, not only those who enlist - everyone plays some kind of role. In the world wars, for example, women went to work in factories, ran farms, managed businesses at home, and some enlisted as nurses, spies, translators, drivers, telephonists... their wartime roles made significant differences to the post-war workforce and life experiences. And not all men went to fight of course - why did some go to war and others didn’t? Which occupations were considered essential and prevented a man from enlisting? Or you might write a man’s story from the perspective of a wife or mother or sister, or vice versa. Whatever comes to your mind at this time of year, write a captivating but very short story. We look forward to hearing them. You can read them aloud at the meeting, and/or share them on Basecamp (there's a folder called April 2026 in the story collection folder).

The Society of Australian Genealogists, Australia’s oldest family history society, is excited to again offer our seven part online course “Beginners Practical Introduction to Family History.”

Over the course of seven sessions (two hours per session) you will learn about:

Traditional records (document based) research – types of records, locating records
Electronic databases – Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast and more
Using maps in family history research
Other resources such as Family History Societies, online forums and education options

Family Tree Maker Workshop Series - Friday AM (10 April 2026)

The Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG), in association with VicGUM, are delighted to present a hands-on Family Tree Maker (FTM) Workshop program for beginner and intermediate users of this popular family history software.

This practical series will teach participants how to set up and use key FTM features to record and manage your family history research. Learning to use all the features provided by FTM effectively will help you to gain the skills needed to produce a family history book using your FTM software.

The program consists of six workshops, delivered monthly over six months, with each workshop running for three hours. Participants will be given homework activities to complete between sessions.

To take part, you’ll need to bring your own laptop with Family Tree Maker installed, and it’s preferable that you already have a tree containing 200–300 people.

Prior to the first session, we will be sending all the participants a short questionnaire to assist the presenter to plan each session to best meet the needs of the attendees. Please watch your emails for a link to the questionnaire and respond to it as soon as possible.

About the Presenter

Fiona Brooker’s family history journey started over 40 years ago with two 19th century marriage certificates taking her research into New Zealand, Australia, North America and the United Kingdom. While living in England, Fiona studied with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies and obtained a Higher Certificate in Genealogy.

She’s a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Professional Historians of Aotearoa New Zealand (PHANZA). She has served as both President and Treasurer of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG) and organised multiple conferences and family history expos.

Memories in Time (www.memoriesintime.co.nz) grew from her desire to help others trace their family history. She is a speaker at international and national conferences and enjoys teaching practical workshops on family history, DNA and AI, in person and virtually. Fiona works with clients to take their research from folders and their computer, into the hands of their family.

Topic: Family Tree Maker Workshop

Lyn Hudson-Williamson will lead a hands-on Family Tree Maker (FTM) Workshop for all users of this popular family history software. Lyn is a member of Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG) and has a Diploma of Family History (UTAS). She has also been a Beta Tester for Family Tree Maker software since 2014.

At this workshop Lyn will lead participants though how to set up and use FTM source citations to record and manage their family history research. Learning to use the source citation features provided by FTM effectively will help them to gain skills to future proof their research. The workshop will also cover the basics of how to add media items to source citations, as well as how to effectively capture online source citations from websites such as Ancestry, Trove and Find-A-Grave. Participant are encouraged to have a play tree ready on their own devices for practical hands on experiences as well.

About the Source Citations Group

The Source Citations Group is for anyone who wants to learn how to generate citations to meet basic research needs and how to generate citations to meet standards for Diploma's and certificates for Family Historians.

The format is a two-hour practical workshop session with plenty of time for questions. Discuss the format of source citations, learn how to create them in family history software, online trees and publications or reports.

This group is suitable for beginners through to those with many years researching experience. The group meets every two months. You can become a member of the group just by attending our meetings.

Guest Speaker: Sienna Brown (Series Producer of 'Caribbean Echoes" podcast)

Sienna Brown was born in Kingston, Jamaica, grew up in Toronto, Canada and now lives in Sydney, Australia. In conjunction with Dr Ben Etherington, she was commissioned by ABC Radio National, the History Listen Series to create Caribbean Convicts in Australia, a podcast that was broadcast in November 2021. She and Ben further collaborated to create further podcasts on the history of Caribbean people in Australia through The History Lab at UTS’s Impact Studios. This was aired September 2025. Sienna has just completed her second historical fiction novel: Secrets of the Monkey House, which is set in 1930s Jamaica.

Discover the rich and diverse stories of the Caribbean and South America at our upcoming Caribbean & South American Research Group meeting. The Society of Australian Genealogists, Australia’s oldest family history society, is excited to again offer our seven part online course “Beginners Practical Introduction to Family History.”

Over the course of seven sessions (two hours per session) you will learn about:

Key tools - family history software platforms, file organisation, research plans
Traditional records (document based) research – types of records, locating records
Electronic databases – Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast and more
Using maps in family history research
Other resources such as Family History Societies, online forums and education options
Introduction to DNA research including legal and ethical considerations
Various ways to chart, share and publish your findings, including privacy and copyright concerns

THEME: Twists In the Tree: Exploring the Revealed, the Resilient and the Radicals

This advanced program will mentor 12 to 16 dedicated family history writers over 12 months from Dec 2025 to Dec 2026. Participants will be guided to bring creativity, narrative skills and research together to craft polished stories of 3,000 to 5,000 words that will be published in an anthology collection.

The course will include:

8 x 2-hour online workshops with supporting materials via an online collaborative working space
Personalised written feedback given on 3 writing exercises per participant
2 x 45 minute one-on-one mentoring sessions per participant to support story development
Small group peer learning communities that share resources, give and receive regular, constructive and respectful feedback and encouragement
An opt-in 4 session online Australian Family History Book club to cultivate the habit of reading like a writer
All participants will be supported through 2 drafting phases to deliver a publication-ready short story, suitable for an adult audience
Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of the anthology with additional copies available at a reduced price

Feeling overwhelmed by the idea of writing a full memoir? Why not start smaller — with one powerful story at a time.

SAG Show & Tell teaches you to create short, five-minute family stories using images, slides and words — a mini TED Talk.

Over four sessions, you’ll craft and shape your own story-driven slide presentation and practice delivering it with confidence. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to present at one of our new in-person Show & Tell nights — or have someone else do it on your behalf.

We plan to create a welcoming space for sharing family history in a fresh format. Whether you're exploring or warming up for a longer memoir, this is the place to begin.

Skills Required:

If you can click, drag, talk and type — you’re in! Apart from being able to use Zoom, no tech skills are needed. We will walk you through the basics of making a simple slideshow using tools like PowerPoint or Google Slides. No stress, no jargon — just stories, images, and a bit of fun.

By the end of the first session, you’ll want to decide on your chosen story. It’s helpful if this is something you’ve already researched and can be illustrated with images (think historical photos, postcards, scanned ephemera). We aim to focus on storytelling rather than research.

Finding Your Scottish Ancestors - Australian Celtic Festival, Glen Innes (01 May 2026)

At the Australian Celtic Festival in Glen Innes (May 2026), the Society will present a session titled “Finding Your Scottish Ancestors.”

The presentation by second generation Scottish Australian, Ruth Graham, will introduce audiences to the Celtic regions from which many Australians descend and explain how migration from these regions shaped Australian communities.

A special focus will be placed on Scotland, highlighting the richness of Scottish historical records such as parish registers, kirk session records, and land and valuation rolls, and how these sources can help researchers trace Scottish migrants who settled in Australia.

The session will also explore the major waves of migration from the Celtic world to Australia across the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, including movements linked to transportation, the Highland Clearances, the Irish famine, mining booms, and assisted migration schemes.

Attendees will gain practical tips on beginning their own research, understanding why ancestors migrated, and locating useful historical records.

DNA Research Group - Tools in Practice is a collaborative group designed to assist researchers with the analysis and interpretation of genetic genealogy results. The group is designed to meet the needs of attendees with an intermediate level of knowledge of genetic genealogy.

Tools in Practice sessions help members consolidate what they have learnt from recent DNA events when applying new tools and techniques in their research. Three Part Online Course

Ancestry is a powerful platform, but many family historians use only a fraction of what it offers — often without being sure they are using it well.

Making the Most of Ancestry – Level 1 is a practical, confidence-building course designed to help you understand how Ancestry works and how to use it effectively. Delivered over three live online sessions, the course focuses on core skills such as navigating the site, understanding trees and settings, managing people and relationships, attaching records with purpose, and developing clear, sustainable habits.

This course is ideal for new or self-taught Ancestry users who want clarity, structure and confidence. An accompanying workbook supports learning during and after the sessions with many examples and demonstrations to assist learning.

Level 1 focuses on foundational principles and essential techniques that every family historian should know; topics such as DNA and advanced research techniques will be covered in later courses.

GROUP: GDAT Chromosome Analysis Group (16 May 2026)

If you already have DNA chromosome analysis skills and are planning to use the GDAT database tool to manage your DNA information, you might wish to join our GDAT chromosome analysis user group. SAG user groups are aimed at ‘members helping members’ so this is a collaborative working group aimed at sharing information and knowledge. You must be a SAG member to join this group.

Sessions will include a short presentation on a specified topic identified by the group, followed by discussion between group members, then round table Q&A regarding the product. We will meet 3-4 times a year on Saturday mornings using the Zoom platform. We won’t be recording the sessions, so you must attend live.

Important things to note:

Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis, incorporating new chromosome analysis techniques and tools.
Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
Basic chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product.

Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

Be computer literate;
Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
Have been working with DNA results at chromosome sites such as GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA and My Heritage ideally for over 12 months;
Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

* Watched the video and undertaken all the tasks in the Quick Start Guide - Setting up;

* Read how the developer (Becky) approaches her DNA analysis, recognising the tool allows for multiple variations - Becky's Process;

* Set up at least one profile, including having added a pedigree for that profile and have uploaded segment data from at least one DNA company, such as GEDmatch, FTDNA, 23&Me or My Heritage. GEDmatch is probably the easiest to start with, utilising Tier 1 tools is recommended for the triangulation report (but not essential).

Any issues arising consult the user guide. If it's not covered in the user guide, submit the question for discussion at the next meeting by posting in the SAG GDAT User Group on Facebook. If the enquiry is more urgent, utilise the ‘Official’ GDAT Facebook User Group.

What you’ll learn:

In this course, you’ll work on your own family history as a case study. With guidance from an experienced genealogist, you’ll practice essential research skills including:

Planning – set goals and focus your research
Analysis – interpret records, identify gaps, and resolve conflicts
Documentation – keep clear records of your sources and conclusions
Using different types of evidence – apply methodology to both documentary records and DNA

Note: this course focuses on methodology and the use of DNA evidence in research planning and analysis. It does not cover the basics of DNA analysis.

The Society of Australian Genealogists, Australia’s oldest family history society, is excited to announce we will once again be holding a face to face intensive version of our "Beginners Practical Introduction to Family History” course at our Library and Research Centre in Sydney as part of our schedule of National Family History Month events.

Over the course of two days you will learn about:

Key tools - family history software platforms, file organisation, research plans
Traditional records (document based) research – types of records, locating records
Electronic databases – Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast and more
Using maps in family history
Other resources such as Family History Societies, online forums and education options
Introduction to DNA research including legal and ethical considerations
Various ways to chart, share and publish your findings, including privacy and copyright concerns

GROUP: GDAT Chromosome Analysis Group (15 August 2026)

Important things to note:

Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis, incorporating new chromosome analysis techniques and tools.
Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
Basic chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product.

Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

Be computer literate;
Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
Have been working with DNA results at chromosome sites such as GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA and My Heritage ideally for over 12 months;
Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

* Watched the video and undertaken all the tasks in the Quick Start Guide - Setting up;

* Read how the developer (Becky) approaches her DNA analysis, recognising the tool allows for multiple variations - Becky's Process;

8 x 2-hour online workshops with supporting materials via an online collaborative working space
Personalised written feedback given on 3 writing exercises per participant
2 x 45 minute one-on-one mentoring sessions per participant to support story development
Small group peer learning communities that share resources, give and receive regular, constructive and respectful feedback and encouragement
An opt-in 4 session online Australian Family History Book club to cultivate the habit of reading like a writer
All participants will be supported through 2 drafting phases to deliver a publication-ready short story, suitable for an adult audience
Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of the anthology with additional copies available at a reduced price

Receiving your DNA test results is an exciting time but it can quickly become confusing.

This session will look at the different types of tests available, which one is right for you and which companies do these tests.

We will look at some basics to help you understand and interpret your matches and there will be plenty of time for questions so you can start finding those new cousins!

This in-person conference invites descendants, family historians, and historians to come together to reclaim and reframe Australia’s convict past.

We are far beyond convict heritage seen as a source of shame; recognising this ancestry as a foundation of resilience, courage, and identity. Convict Descendants Reclaim Their Stories celebrates the people whose lives built the nation and the generations who now give voice to them.

Early bird ticket prices for members will be available until mid-2026. Ticket prices include lunch and breaks. There is an optional conference dinner on Thursday night for an additional $95 per person.

The Epping Club has car parking available and is 5 minutes' walk from a train and metro station for public transport (about 30 minutes on the metro from Central).

Those coming from out of Sydney may wish to stay in the city or at the nearby Crown Plaza Sydney Macquarie Park.

GROUP: GDAT Chromosome Analysis Group (21 November 2026)

Important things to note:

Discussion will be focussed on utilising the GDAT software for DNA analysis, incorporating new chromosome analysis techniques and tools.
Members must have an understanding of the principles of chromosome analysis before joining the group;
Basic chromosome analysis questions WILL NOT be discussed, except in the context of using the GDAT product.

Pre-requisite Knowledge for using GDAT:

Be computer literate;
Have the ability to work with spreadsheets and large data sets;
Have been working with DNA results at chromosome sites such as GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA and My Heritage ideally for over 12 months;
Understand the concepts of chromosome analysis and can apply them in practice, in particular:
1. Be able to differentiate between shared matches and shared segments;
2. Be able to interpret when matches are ICW on a segment;
3. Understand triangulation concepts and how to identify Triangulated Groups at each DNA site.

Before joining our user group, it is best if you have already:

* Watched the video and undertaken all the tasks in the Quick Start Guide - Setting up;

* Read how the developer (Becky) approaches her DNA analysis, recognising the tool allows for multiple variations - Becky's Process;
