Topic: Diggers, robbers and getters

Our June meeting will cover one of the biggest change events of Colonial times - the gold rush!

Each decade from the 1850s saw new gold discoveries in each colony.

Gold fever hit the world and created a population and economic boom in Australia.

Along with those digging for gold were those robbing the gold - our great bushranger legends arose from robbing gold transports.

We’ll also focus on another ‘gold rush’ - the cedar rush. This took men deep into new territory searching for the prized timber to build and furnish Colonial homes.

Timber getters lived dangerously when logging, milling and transporting timber to a growing colony.

If you have gold diggers, bush rangers or timber getters in your family and you’d like to do a short presentation to our group, get in touch with us at Colonialaustgroup@gmail.com

Skill level: All
