The Manuscript and Image Collection of the SAG contains over 40,000 photographs. Many of these are a part of family histories which have also been deposited with us. These family histories help identify the photographs and provide them with background stories. The majority of our photographs relate to Australia and Britain, as that is the ancestry of most of our members. However, we collect material from any country and any time period if it has value for genealogical research. The format of the photographs in our collection range from single photos, to albums, packets of slides and digital images. The photographic types and dates include daguerreotypes taken in the 1840s-1860s, ambrotypes from 1850s-1880s, carte de visite from 1850s to 1890s, cabinet cards from 1870s to early 1900s, tintypes, platinotypes, 35mm slides, and recent snapshots. |
