So what has sugar to do with genealogy? Quite a lot, actually.

The sugar trade encompasses the slave trade, migration and shipping, engineering
and architecture, tool-making, industry in the UK and elsewhere and the collecting of natural specimens at the British Museum. Not to mention the health problems caused by overindulgence in what was at one stage quite an exotic delicacy.

In this webinar Patrice Connelly will introduce you to Sir Hans Sloane,
look at what sugar actually is and how it was refined, the art of
sculpting sugar, the types of populations and demographics affected and
speak about the various resources to assist you in exploring this most
interesting area of genealogy. Most of the talk will concern the UK, but
she will also mention the North Queensland sugar farms.

So, were your ancestors involved in making tools to wrest sugar from
cones, or owners of slaves or ships involved in the trade, confectionary
makers, or dentists who treated rotten teeth?

Presenter: Patrice Connelly
