Prepare for Formal Study, Brush Up On Your Skills

Three Part Online Course

This is a three week ‘bootcamp’ style course designed to refresh and enhance your academic skills, skills that family historians and genealogists need for success in formal study.

After completion of the course, you will be able to step more confidently into formal genealogical study, whenever you decide to take that step.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • how to analyse assignment questions;
  • understand how rubrics provide a framework for answers;
  • how to choose the right style and structure for your writing;
  • decide what to include/not include to meet word length limits;
  • understand the importance of spelling, grammar, and proofreading;
  • recognise what needs referencing and what doesn’t;
  • understand the levels of references in terms of what is academic and what is not;
  • apply clear, correct referencing.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Yvonne Masters has a background in education, both as a teacher, particularly of English and History, and as a university lecturer in teacher education. She has been researching her own and her husband’s family histories for over 40 years and, now retired, genealogy is her passion, making her question how she ever found time to work! Yvonne has completed the UTAS Diploma of Family History, and both SAG’s Certificate of Genealogical Research and the Diploma of Family Historical Studies. She is a member of the Diploma and Certificate Committee and assists with both courses. Yvonne also assists in presenting courses on starting family history and research skills for family history for Genealogy SA.
