We couldn’t operate without the help of our wonderful volunteers!

It is an amazing way to share your passion for family history with our community. The Society has volunteers involved in many different activities. Some opportunities are in person, whilst many are able to be undertaken remotely.

You don't have to be an experienced researcher to join the volunteer ranks as you can learn on the job, but computer skills would be advantageous for almost all roles.

It is also important to note that volunteers must be financial members of the Society for insurance purposes and must be willing to comply with the Society's Code of Conduct and relevant policies and procedures.

Areas of volunteering include:

  • Library visitor help and research assistance
  • Collections (library and archives) processing and cataloguing
  • Collection digitisation and transcription
  • Online event hosts
  • Education program hosts
  • In-person event assistance
  • Group Leads
  • ...and many other areas!

Volunteer benefits include:

  • Opportunities to create meaningful connections in the family history community.
  • Gain practical skills in historical research, digital literacy, genetic genealogy concepts and other emerging technologies.
  • Complimentary access to selected events from the Society's extensive program.

How do I Apply to become a volunteer?

  1. Fill in the online 'Expression of Interest' form available here.
  2. The Society will be in touch with you within 14 working days (wherever possible).
  3. If there is a vacancy currently available aligned with your experience and skills, you will be invited to a Volunteer Information Session. This may be online or in-person, and may be individual or in a small group setting.
  4. Following the Volunteer Information Session, we will be in contact with applicants to follow up on next steps. Please be aware we may not be accommodate all volunteer offers at this point.

This round of EOIs closes COB Fri 20 Feb 2026. We anticipate that a second EOI round will commence in June 2026.

Please note, from time to time the Society may makes transcription projects available via external online platforms. Participants in these projects do not have to necessarily be a volunteer with the Society - anyone is able to contribute.
