The Mercers' Company: Power, Profits and Property

In the history of England, one institution stands out for longevity, power, prosperity and influence. The Mercer’s Company was established in the fourteenth-century as the first of the major livery companies of London. From the start, members would wield their wealth and power through international trade in luxury fabrics and textiles as well as from their personal fiefdoms. Schools were founded, charities set up, and swathes of property acquired in London and elsewhere.

In this talk, Patrice Connelly will look at its origins, history and what the Company does. She’ll note some important figures and their influence, its role in the Irish Plantations and then cover where to find genealogy records. Was your ancestor a mercer, or a friend or relative? Did they work for the Company or receive alms from them? Did they teach or study at one of the Company’s schools? Were any of them settlers on Mercer’s Plantation lands in county Londonderry? You may be surprised at the reach this institution had and still has.
